Mission Statement
Welcome to our facility! The mission of the Foundation is to serve
as a comprehensive source of quality primary healthcare and to preserve
future access to healthcare for the citizens of Edgar County and surrounding
communities. The Foundation's role in the community is to work with residents,
area healthcare providers, and business to identify and respond to changing
community healthcare needs and the changing healthcare environment.
Our History
The beginning of Paris Community Hospital can be traced back to the first "modern" hospital for Paris or the former Paris Hospital. It was built in approximately 1914 as a 25-bed facility. In 1939 the hospital was expanded to 75 beds. The Paris Hospital continued to serve the healthcare needs of the community until the 1960's, when hospitalization experienced dramatic changes.
There were major changes in technology and equipment, and the demand for hospital services sometimes found patients placed in hallways as the capacity frequently went over the 75 bed limit. It was determined that an entirely new hospital was needed in Paris. It was also decided that the best opportunity for continued quality healthcare was a community-owned hospital.
In 1965 the Hospital & Medical Foundation of Paris, Inc. was established, making way for the community-owned hospital, Paris Community Hospital. Some 800 volunteers throughout East-Central Illinois were given the task of raising the $1 million needed to make the community hospital a reality. This drive, which surpassed it's goal, along with a federal grant under the Hill-Burton program and mortgage financing through local financial instituions allowed groundbreaking for the facility to take place in 1968. The move to the new facillity took place two years later, in November, 1970.
By 1995, a $3 million, two part expansion was underway to bring medical services together in one central location.. The first part of the expansion involved a 9,500 square foot expanded and remodeled Emergency Room, which also contained the Special Care Unit. The second part added 13,300 square feet of new space in a one-story Primary Care Center, the Family Medical Center . The building project also included meeting space for health-related classes and other community programs, a new pharmacy for use by the public, a separate pediatric waiting room for the emergency/outpatient department, a new central admissions/information desk, and a gift shop managed by the hospital volunteers.
Despite all the many changes in the healthcare environment that have occurred since the opening of the new hospital, the community remains the strong partner in the future growth and success of Paris Community Hospital. For its part, Paris Community Hospital maintains an ongoing commitment to meeting the healthcare needs of our patients and a commitment to serve as a comprehensive source for quality primary healthcare services and to preserve access to those services for the people of Edgar County and surrounding areas.
